Safety and Risk

What safety systems does Venture Beyond use on expedition?

Every Venture Beyond expedition operates under a formal safety management system built specifically for school groups. Our guides are trained in first aid and bring deep practical knowledge of Mount Rinjani. Most have worked on the mountain for over ten years, and that experience is one of the most important safety assets we have. Each expedition has a designated lead guide responsible for daily safety briefings, route assessment, and go/no-go decisions based on weather, group fitness, and trail conditions. On more demanding stages, such as the summit push, additional porter support provides extra coverage for the group. Mobile coverage on Lombok and the Rinjani trail network is good, and all expeditions carry radios as a backup communication tool. Emergency evacuation procedures are established before every expedition departs, and we work with your school risk committee in advance to ensure all protocols meet your school's requirements.

What happens if conditions are unsafe on summit day?

Safety always takes priority over summit success. Our lead guide makes the go/no-go call on summit day based on weather conditions, temperature, wind, group fitness, and trail conditions. This decision is made by the guide on the ground, not remotely, and it is final. If conditions are deemed unsafe, the group will rest at the crater rim camp and reassess. In most cases, a delayed start or a rest day resolves the issue. If summit day cannot proceed at all, the group descends safely and the expedition continues with the remaining programme elements. Summiting Mount Rinjani at 3,726 metres is a serious undertaking, and no summit attempt is guaranteed. What we do guarantee is that every decision made on the mountain puts your students first.

Is helicopter rescue available on Mount Rinjani?

Helicopter rescue is available on Mount Rinjani and is coordinated through TNGR, the Rinjani National Park authority. In the event of a serious medical emergency that requires evacuation, TNGR manages the rescue operation and coordinates with ground teams. Helicopter evacuation coverage is included in the price of every Venture Beyond expedition. However, we also require every student and staff member to hold individual travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation as a condition of joining the expedition. This ensures full coverage at both the group and individual level. Our guides are experienced in emergency assessment and will make the call to request evacuation when necessary. Twelve years of operations on Rinjani means we have established relationships with park authorities and know exactly how to respond if the situation demands it.

What is the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) on Mount Rinjani?

Acute Mountain Sickness is a possibility on Mount Rinjani, but the risk is relatively low compared to higher altitude destinations. At 3,726 metres, Rinjani sits below the threshold where serious altitude illness becomes common, and our itineraries are designed with acclimatisation built in. That said, AMS can affect anyone regardless of fitness level, and we take it seriously. Our guides carry pulse oximeters on all summit expeditions, which allow us to monitor blood oxygen levels and assess symptoms in individual students. This gives us an objective tool to support the go/no-go decision at altitude. Before departure, we work with your school to ensure staff are briefed on how to recognise AMS symptoms and understand our management protocols. The safest and most effective treatment for AMS is descent, and our guides will not hesitate to take that action if a student shows signs of deterioration.

What documentation does Venture Beyond provide for school risk committees?

Venture Beyond provides a comprehensive documentation package to support your school's risk committee approval process. This includes full risk assessments for every activity on the expedition, covering the specific hazards involved, the likelihood and consequence of each risk, and the controls we have put in place to manage them. For Mount Rinjani summit and crater rim expeditions, we provide a detailed rescue plan that outlines our emergency response procedures, evacuation routes, communication protocols, and the roles of each guide in an emergency situation. All documents are provided well in advance of departure so your school has adequate time to review, seek clarification, and complete its internal approval process. We are also available to present to or answer questions from your risk committee directly if required.

Logistics and Travel

How do students get to Lombok?

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is well connected to major regional hubs, making it straightforward to reach from most school locations. Singapore-based schools can fly direct to Lombok on Scoot, with a flight time of approximately two hours and twenty minutes. Australian schools typically route through Bali or Singapore, with total travel time from major Australian cities ranging from six to nine hours depending on the connection. For schools that are already spending time in Bali, the fast boat crossing to Lombok is a great option. We recommend Eka Jaya, a reliable and well-established fast boat operator running between Bali and the Gili Islands or Lombok. The crossing takes approximately two hours. Venture Beyond handles all ground transfers from the airport to your accommodation and between all expedition locations throughout the programme. From the moment your group lands, logistics on the ground are our responsibility.

Where do students stay during the expedition?

Accommodation throughout the expedition is arranged through trusted third-party providers that we have established relationships with on Lombok. Depending on your itinerary, students will stay in Senaru, Sembalun, Tanjung, or Senggigi, each location selected for its proximity to the next day's activities and its suitability for school groups. On the mountain itself, students camp at established sites along the Rinjani trail, with camping equipment provided as part of the expedition. Accommodation on the Gili Islands is available for schools that want to include a reef and marine environment component in their programme. However, we generally favour keeping groups on the mainland, as the Gili Islands are a popular tourist destination and less conducive to the focused, purposeful experience we aim to provide for school groups. All accommodation is selected with school groups in mind, and we conduct site assessments to ensure standards meet our requirements before recommending any property to a school.

What food is provided during the expedition?

All meals are included throughout the expedition, from arrival to departure. On the mountain, our porter teams prepare meals at camp using fresh ingredients carried up from the trailhead. Off the mountain, meals are provided at your accommodation or at local restaurants selected by our team. We offer a variety of dishes drawing on both local Indonesian cuisine and more familiar international options, giving students a genuine taste of Lombok while ensuring everyone is well fed and energised for the days ahead. We can cater to all dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and common allergies. We ask that schools provide us with a full list of dietary needs during the planning process so we can make arrangements well in advance.

What gear do students need to bring on expedition?

Every student will receive a detailed gear list from Venture Beyond during the planning process, tailored to the specific expedition they are joining. The list is designed to be practical and achievable. For trekking expeditions, the essentials include a quality pair of broken-in hiking boots, warm layers for the cold nights at altitude, and a waterproof jacket. Sleeping bags and all camping and cooking equipment are provided by our porter teams. We recommend students bring a sleeping bag liner for added warmth and comfort. For the Cultural and Service Expedition, gear requirements are considerably lighter. We provide guidance on what is and is not necessary so students and parents are not over-investing in equipment they do not need. We are happy to advise schools on where to source gear locally or on Lombok itself, where quality hiking equipment is available at reasonable prices.

How do we communicate with parents during the expedition?

Parent communication during the expedition is managed by the teacher leading the group. Venture Beyond ensures the lead teacher has everything they need to stay informed throughout. Our guides provide daily briefings on the next day's plan, route, and any relevant conditions, so the lead teacher is always across what is happening and can communicate with confidence. Mobile coverage on Lombok and along the Rinjani trail network is generally good, meaning the lead teacher can stay in contact with parents and the school back home throughout the expedition. On the mountain itself, coverage can be intermittent at certain elevations. We recommend that schools set clear expectations with parents before departure regarding communication frequency and response times. Students are generally discouraged from using personal devices during the expedition, as this significantly enhances the quality of the experience.

Pricing and Booking

How are Venture Beyond expeditions priced?

Every Venture Beyond expedition is custom-quoted for your school. Pricing depends on group size, expedition type, duration, and the specific programme elements included. We do not publish fixed prices because no two school groups have identical requirements, and we prefer to provide an accurate quote based on your school's needs rather than a generic figure. As a general guide, larger groups benefit from a lower per-student cost due to the fixed nature of certain expedition costs such as permits, guide fees, and ground logistics. We are transparent about what is and is not included in the quote, and there are no hidden fees. To give you a sense of the manpower involved, a group of 20 students climbing Rinjani would typically have 5 guides and 25 porters supporting them on the mountain. We are highly competitive on price and offer exceptional value for money when compared to similar school expeditions elsewhere in Southeast Asia. We will come back to you within three business days of receiving your enquiry.

What is included in the expedition price?

All Venture Beyond expedition quotes include accommodation throughout the programme, all meals from arrival to departure, national park permits, guide and porter fees, ground transfers, camping equipment, sleeping bags, and our pre-expedition documentation package including risk assessments and rescue plans. International flights, individual travel insurance, personal gear, and any optional activities outside the agreed programme are not included and are arranged by the school independently. We provide a clear inclusions and exclusions list with every quote so there are no surprises. If you have specific requirements or would like to add elements to the programme, we are happy to discuss this during the planning process.

About the Expedition

What age groups are suitable for a Lombok school expedition?

Our expeditions are designed for secondary school students, typically from Year 10 upwards, aged 15 and over. The right expedition depends on your students' fitness levels and your school's programme goals rather than age alone. Younger or less experienced groups are well suited to the Sembalun Highlands or Cultural and Service expeditions, which provide a genuine and challenging experience without the demands of high altitude trekking. Older or more experienced students can work toward the Crater Rim or full Summit expeditions, which require a higher level of fitness and mental resilience. We do not offer or recommend the Mount Rinjani Summit expedition to students under the age of 15. This is a firm position based on the physical and psychological demands of summiting at 3,726 metres, and we will not compromise on it regardless of fitness level.

How far in advance should we book a Lombok school expedition?

We recommend booking at least six months in advance to give your school adequate time to complete the internal approval process, present to your risk committee, brief parents, and allow students to prepare physically for the demands of the expedition. That said, we can accommodate last minute bookings depending on national park permit and accommodation availability. If you have a shorter lead time, get in touch and we will let you know what is possible. We always confirm availability before accepting a booking. Booking earlier does give you more certainty, particularly for popular dates during the dry season between May and October, which is when the majority of school expeditions take place.

What is the best time of year to run a school expedition to Lombok?

The best time to run a school expedition to Lombok is between April and November, which covers the dry season on the island. During this period, trail conditions on Mount Rinjani are at their best, rainfall is minimal, and visibility from the upper mountain is typically excellent. Outside of this window, Lombok experiences its wet season, which brings heavy rainfall, unpredictable conditions on the mountain, and an increased risk of trail closures. We do not recommend scheduling school expeditions between December and March. Within the April to November window, the peak months of June, July, and August align well with school holiday periods for both Australian and Singapore-based schools. We recommend booking early if your preferred dates fall within this period.
