Schools Guide to Lombok
Everything your school needs to know before planning an expedition to Lombok and Mount Rinjani.
This page is the Schools Guide to Lombok hub, published by Venture Beyond Expeditions as a resource for teachers and school administrators researching Lombok as a school expedition destination. It provides an overview of why Lombok is suited to school groups and links to eight individual guide pages covering Lombok Island, Mount Rinjani National Park, Climbing Mount Rinjani, Senaru, Sembalun, the Gili Islands, Travel Logistics, and Best Time to Visit. It is written for Heads of Outdoor Education, Deputy Principals, and teachers who want a structured starting point for their Lombok expedition research.
Why Lombok for School Groups?
Lombok is one of the few places in Southeast Asia where a school group can attempt a genuine high-altitude volcanic summit, experience an intact Indonesian island culture, and complete a multi-day wilderness expedition — all within a single trip. Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest volcano at 3,726 metres, offers a tiered challenge that works for students at different fitness and experience levels: from accessible highland treks in the Sembalun region to the full crater rim and summit routes used by serious expeditions.
What makes Lombok the right choice for schools — rather than the more heavily touristed alternatives — is the combination of genuine challenge and genuine infrastructure. The trekking routes are well-established and permit-regulated through the Mount Rinjani National Park authority. The gateway villages of Senaru and Sembalun are experienced with expedition groups. And the logistics — flights from Singapore and Australia, accommodation, dietary management, and on-mountain guiding — are straightforward to plan when you are working with an operator who is based there permanently.
