This page is a school expedition planning guide to Sembalun, a highland valley on the eastern slope of Mount Rinjani in East Lombok, Indonesia. It is written for Heads of Outdoor Education and Deputy Principals at independent schools in Singapore and Australia who are planning a student expedition to Lombok with Venture Beyond Expeditions. The page covers what Sembalun is, how to get there from Lombok International Airport, key distances to Senaru, Bangsal Harbour, and Siloam Hospitals Mataram, the cultural environment students will encounter including Desa Adat Beleq traditional village and the Sasak farming community, the Sembalun waterfalls (Mangku Sakti and Mangku Kodek near Sajang village), the Sembalun Hills trekking program including the Dandaun Trail, Bao Daya Trail, Pergasingan Hill, Anak Dara, Kondok-Seribu Traverse, Bukit Gedong, Sembalun Crater Rim Trek, and Bukit Nanggi, and frequently asked questions relevant to school group logistics and duty of care planning. Sembalun is one of two main gateways for climbing Mount Rinjani and the starting point for the Venture Beyond Sembalun Highlands Expedition. Venture Beyond Expeditions is an Australian-registered school expedition operator whose ground partner, Rinjani Dawn Adventures, operates out of Sembalun and has been active on Lombok for over twelve years.

Schools Guide to Lombok

Sembalun

Sembalun is a highland valley on the eastern slope of Mount Rinjani in East Lombok, Indonesia. Sitting at approximately 1,063 metres above sea level, it is one of two main gateways for climbing Rinjani and the starting point for the Venture Beyond Sembalun Highlands Expedition. Where Senaru on the northern slope is dense with rainforest and village life, Sembalun opens into something entirely different: wide savanna grassland, strawberry fields stretching across the valley floor, and Rinjani’s summit rising dramatically to the west. It is a landscape of outstanding natural beauty, and one that leaves a strong impression on students arriving here for the first time.

The valley sits within the Sembalun district of East Lombok and is framed on all sides by a natural amphitheatre of hills. Pergasingan Hill to the northeast rises to approximately 1,700 metres and is the most accessible highland trek in the area, offering panoramic views across the farmland below with Rinjani filling the skyline. The mornings here are cool and often misty, with overnight temperatures that can drop to 12 degrees Celsius; a genuine contrast to the heat of coastal Lombok or Singapore, and an important part of preparing students for the physical and mental demands of expedition life.

For school groups, Sembalun offers a distinctive outdoor education experience that does not require a full mountain trek to be meaningful. The Venture Beyond Sembalun Highlands Expedition is our entry-level program, designed for schools visiting Lombok for the first time or for year groups where fitness levels vary. It combines highland trekking, cultural immersion at Desa Adat Beleq traditional village, and direct engagement with the Sasak farming community that has worked this land for generations. All programs are led on the ground by our team at Rinjani Dawn Adventures, the locally operated partner company that Venture Beyond founder Angus built on Lombok over twelve years ago.

This guide covers everything a school expedition coordinator needs to know about Sembalun: the landscape, the logistics, the culture, the waterfalls, and the hills. If you are ready to start planning, complete the enquiry form below and our team will be in touch within 24 hours.

Sembalun for Schools

Sembalun is the ideal starting point for schools bringing a group to Lombok for the first time. The highland valley setting, the accessible trekking terrain, and the cultural richness of the Sasak community combine to create an outdoor education experience that is genuinely challenging without being beyond reach. Students do not need prior trekking experience to get the most out of a Sembalun program; they need curiosity, a willingness to push themselves, and a good pair of boots.

The Venture Beyond Sembalun Highlands Expedition is our entry-level program and the natural starting point for most schools. It is built around Pergasingan Hill, a highland ridge rising to approximately 1,700 metres with sweeping views across the valley and Rinjani’s summit as a constant backdrop. The ascent is achievable for students with a reasonable base fitness level and delivers a genuine sense of accomplishment that more comfortable experiences simply cannot replicate. For many students, it is the first time they have pushed through discomfort to reach something worth reaching.

Beyond the trekking, Sembalun offers meaningful cultural encounters that are difficult to find elsewhere on Lombok. A visit to Desa Adat Beleq, the restored traditional Sasak hamlet within the district, gives students direct exposure to a way of life that exists largely outside the tourist economy. The strawberry farming families of the valley are accustomed to visitors and genuinely welcoming; conversations here, mediated by our local guides, often become the moments students remember most clearly when they return home.

All Venture Beyond programs in Sembalun are led on the ground by Rinjani Dawn Adventures, the locally operated partner company founded by Venture Beyond’s Angus and run day-to-day by Indonesian co-founder Saefudin Zohri. Schools are not working with a booking agent or a middleman. They are working directly with the people who built the operation, know every guide by name, and wrote the safety protocols themselves. For Heads of Outdoor Education and Deputy Principals responsible for student welfare, that distinction matters.

If your school is considering Lombok for the first time, or if you are looking for a program that delivers real challenge within a carefully managed framework, Sembalun is where we recommend you start. Complete the enquiry form below and our team will be in touch within 24 hours.

Travel and Logistics

Getting to Sembalun

Sembalun is reached by private vehicle transfer from Lombok International Airport (LOP), a journey of approximately 83 kilometres that takes around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on road conditions and traffic. The route heads northeast from the airport, passing through Mataram before climbing steadily into the highlands of East Lombok. We typically stop for lunch on the way through, giving students a chance to stretch their legs, eat well, and take in their first impressions of inland Lombok before the final climb into the valley. The last section of the drive is one of the most striking road journeys on the island; the road rises sharply, the air cools noticeably, and Rinjani begins to reveal itself above the ridge line ahead.

All transfers for Venture Beyond school groups are arranged by our ground team at Rinjani Dawn Adventures and are included in the expedition package. Schools do not need to organise independent transport at any point during the program. Our vehicles are private, air-conditioned, and sized to the group.

Key Distances from Sembalun

The information below gives school coordinators a clear picture of Sembalun’s position relative to the other key locations on a typical Venture Beyond program.

  • Sembalun to Lombok International Airport (LOP): approximately 83km, around 2.5 to 3 hours by road.
  • Sembalun to Senaru: approximately 1 hour by road. This is the route taken by groups completing a full Rinjani traverse in reverse, or by schools combining both gateways across a longer program.
  • Sembalun to Bangsal Harbour: approximately 2 hours by road. Bangsal is the main departure point for the Gili Islands and is included as an optional extension for some school programs following the highland program.
  • Sembalun to Siloam Hospitals Mataram: approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Siloam is the preferred hospital for any serious medical event during a Venture Beyond program. It is the most capable private facility on Lombok and the one our team would use in the event of an emergency requiring hospital-level care. Transfer time from Sembalun is a standing component of our emergency response planning.

For school coordinators completing risk assessments and duty of care documentation, the transfer time to Siloam Hospitals Mataram is the most important distance figure on this page. We recommend noting it in your pre-trip risk register. Our guides carry emergency contact information, and our ground team maintains a 24-hour response protocol for all active programs.

Sembalun itself has no hospital. The nearest clinic is a small community health post (Puskesmas) in Sembalun Lawang village, suitable for minor first aid. For anything beyond that, the protocol is immediate transfer toward Mataram.

Sasak Village Life

Culture and Community

Onto the culture section. This is what we wrote for the Senaru. Try and make it a bit different, if possible. Talk more about the mountain guiding culture, as well as the traditional culture:

Culture and Community
Senaru is a traditional Sasak village, and for most students it will be their first encounter with rural Indonesian life. The Sasak are the indigenous people of Lombok, with a distinct language, culture, and history that sets them apart from the better-known cultures of neighbouring Bali. Time in Senaru is not a cultural performance put on for visitors. It is simply village life, and students are moving through it.
The community is predominantly Muslim, and students will hear the call to prayer five times a day, beginning before dawn. This is one of the more immediate and memorable aspects of arrival for many students. We ask all group members to be respectful of prayer times, to dress modestly when moving through the village, and to approach the community with the same curiosity and humility that makes a good expedition member on the mountain.
What Students Observe
Village life in Senaru moves at a pace that most students from Singapore or Australia have not experienced before. Women weave traditional Sasak textiles outside their homes. Children walk to school along the same paths that trekking groups use to reach the national park entrance. Farmers tend terraced gardens on the slopes below the village. The forest begins where the houses end.
Our local guides, most of whom grew up in Senaru or the surrounding villages, are an important part of this cultural experience. They are not tour guides reciting a script. They are community members who know the village, know the mountain, and are willing to share both with the right kind of visitors. Students who ask questions and show genuine interest tend to get a great deal back.
Behaviour and Expectations
Venture Beyond includes a cultural briefing as part of the pre-departure program materials and repeats the key points on arrival. The essentials are straightforward:

* Dress modestly when walking through the village. Shoulders and knees covered for both male and female students.
* Remove shoes when entering homes or places of worship if invited inside.
* Ask before photographing local people, particularly women and children.
* Greet people with a smile and a simple “Selamat pagi” (good morning) or “Terima kasih” (thank you). It goes a long way.
* Stay together as a group when moving through the village. Students should not wander independently.
These are not onerous requirements. They are the basic conditions for being a respectful guest in someone else’s community, and most students adapt quickly. Schools that have visited Senaru consistently report that the cultural dimension of the program is one of the aspects students reflect on most after returning home.

Sembalun District

Sembalun Waterfalls

The Sembalun area is home to two of the most distinctive waterfalls on Lombok: Mangku Sakti and Mangku Kodek. Both are located near Sajang village, a short drive from the Sembalun valley, and are visited together on the same half-day program. The walk from Sajang village to the falls takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes each way through the surrounding landscape, making it an accessible addition to the program without requiring a full trekking day.

Mangku Sakti is the standout waterfall of the Sembalun region and one of the most visually striking on the entire island. Unlike the lush jungle waterfalls found at Senaru, Mangku Sakti is carved into limestone with a more open, volcanic landscape surrounding it. The water has a distinctive milky blue colour, caused by mineral and sulphur deposits from Rinjani’s volcanic activity mixing with the river. The rocks have been eroded over time into smooth canyon shapes that make the setting feel genuinely unusual. Students who have seen photographs of Lombok waterfalls before arriving are typically not expecting this.

Mangku Kodek sits just downstream from Mangku Sakti and is visited as part of the same excursion. It is smaller and narrower, with a slot canyon character that makes it a different but complementary experience to Mangku Sakti. The two falls together give students a sense of the variety of the Sembalun landscape beyond the valley floor and the trekking trails.

All waterfall visits on Venture Beyond programs are assessed by our ground team in advance, particularly following wet season rainfall when water levels and trail conditions can change quickly. The walk from Sajang village is straightforward in dry season conditions and is well within the capability of any student participating in a Sembalun program. Our guides accompany the group throughout and are familiar with the route.

Pergasingan and Beyond

Sembalun Hills

Sembalun is one of the finest highland trekking destinations in Eastern Indonesia, and one that is rarely given the credit it deserves. Most visitors pass through on their way to Rinjani. The schools that take the time to explore the valley itself discover a range of trekking objectives that can challenge every ability level, from a first afternoon in the highlands to a multi-day summit program that pushes experienced groups to their limit.

The hills surrounding Sembalun are the foundation of the Venture Beyond Sembalun Highlands Expedition. Every program is built around the group: their experience level, their goals, and the time they have available. Schools can choose a single objective or combine several across a longer program, building confidence and capability progressively as the days unfold.

Dandaun Trail

The Dandaun Trail is the most accessible trek in the Sembalun Highlands and a natural choice for a group’s first afternoon in Sembalun. The route climbs from the village through the Dandaun savanna to Bukit Telaga at 1,537m, gaining 347m over just over a kilometre of trail. Most school groups reach the viewpoint in 45 minutes to 1 hour, with the descent taking around 30 to 40 minutes. From the summit, Rinjani fills the western skyline and the full sweep of the Sembalun Valley opens below. For students arriving after a long travel day, this short climb delivers an immediate sense of where they are and what the program is about.

Bao Daya Trail

The Bao Daya Trail is a gentle half-day trek and one of the best sunrise or sunset objectives in the Sembalun Highlands. The route climbs from Sembalun Village through open grassland, gaining 304m over approximately 2km to reach the summit at 1,555m. Most school groups reach the top in 1 to 1.5 hours at a comfortable pace. The summit offers clear views across the Sembalun Valley and toward Rinjani, and the short distance makes it easy to time the approach around first light or late afternoon. Bao Daya works well as a confidence-building first full day for groups who have already completed the Dandaun Trail on arrival, and as a stepping stone before moving on to longer overnight objectives.

Pergasingan Hill

Pergasingan Hill is the most popular day trek in the Sembalun Valley and a natural first objective for school groups new to highland trekking on Lombok. The route climbs steadily from Sembalun Village through open savanna grassland, with Rinjani’s summit cone dominating the skyline throughout the ascent. The final ridge section involves some hands-on scrambling before opening onto a narrow summit at 1,798m with panoramic views across the valley floor and toward the Rinjani crater. The exposed ridgeline and elevation gain provide genuine challenge without technical difficulty. Most school groups complete the round trip in 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness and pace.

Anak Dara

Anak Dara is a compact overnight objective that delivers a genuine summit experience within a short distance from Sembalun Village. The route climbs steadily through open grassland before reaching the summit ridge at 1,870m, where students camp overnight. The exposed ridge position means clear weather brings exceptional views across the Sembalun Valley floor and toward the Rinjani massif. Day 2 descends via the same route in 1.5 to 2 hours, finishing by mid-morning. The overnight camp at altitude is often a highlight for younger groups experiencing their first mountain bivouac.

Kondok-Seribu Traverse

The Kondok-Seribu Traverse is a dual-summit loop taking in Bukit Kondok at 1,801m and Gunung Seribu at 1,934m, starting and finishing in Sembalun Village. The route covers 6.64km with 817m of total ascent, making it one of the more demanding day options in the Sembalun Highlands. It can also be run as a 2-day overnight program with camp near the summit ridge. Clear conditions bring views across the Sembalun Valley, surrounding peaks, and the eastern coastline of Lombok.

Bukit Gedong

Bukit Gedong is a solid overnight program taking students to a summit ridge at 2,144m. The Day 1 ascent begins through forest before opening onto open montane grassland and ridge terrain, with views toward Rinjani becoming visible as the tree cover thins. The approach takes approximately 3 to 4 hours at school group pace, finishing at a sheltered campsite near the summit. Day 2 descends in 2 to 2.5 hours, returning to the trailhead by mid-morning. Bukit Gedong works well as the overnight centrepiece of a 4 to 6 day Sembalun program and gives students a meaningful high-altitude experience without the technical demands of the Rinjani crater rim.

Sembalun Crater Rim Trek

The Sembalun Crater Rim Trek is the most demanding program in the Sembalun Highlands and the natural capstone of a multi-day expedition. The route climbs from Sembalun Village at 1,063m to the southern crater rim of Mount Rinjani at 2,659m, gaining nearly 1,600m of vertical over 9.3km on Day 1. The ascent passes through open savanna before the gradient steepens significantly on the upper slopes, finishing at a high camp on or near the crater rim. Day 1 typically takes 7 to 9 hours at school group pace. The camp at the crater rim, with the caldera lake visible below and the summit pyramid above, is one of the defining experiences of the program. This program requires students to have completed at least one prior overnight trek and works best as the final challenge in a progressive 6 to 8 day Sembalun program.

Bukit Nanggi

Bukit Nanggi is the highest non-volcanic summit on Lombok at 2,260m and the most demanding objective in the Sembalun Highlands. The route climbs from Sembalun Bumbung through farmland before entering open savanna and a series of steep ridgelines. The summit offers a 360-degree panorama, with Rinjani’s crater wall to the west and, on a clear morning, the silhouette of Mount Tambora on Sumbawa to the east. This program is offered as an advanced alternative for small groups and as a contingency when Rinjani summit access is restricted. Group suitability is assessed before this program is confirmed.

Planning Your Program

Every Venture Beyond school program in Sembalun is built around the group. Schools do not choose from a fixed menu. They work with our team to design an itinerary that matches their students’ experience level, their curriculum goals, and the time they have available. A first-visit school might combine the Dandaun Trail on arrival with Pergasingan Hill the following day and Mangku Sakti waterfall on day three. A returning school might build toward Bukit Gedong or the Crater Rim over six days. Complete the enquiry form below and we will put together a program outline specific to your group.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sembalun and where is it located?

Sembalun is a highland valley and district on the eastern slope of Mount Rinjani in East Lombok, Indonesia. Sitting at approximately 1,063 metres above sea level, it is the highest settled area on the island and one of the most striking landscapes in the entire region. The valley is enclosed by a ring of rolling hills with Rinjani’s summit rising dramatically to the west. The terrain is open savanna rather than rainforest, which gives Sembalun a completely different character to Senaru on the northern side of the mountain. For school groups, Sembalun serves as both a destination in its own right and the eastern gateway for Rinjani trekking programs.

How far is Sembalun from Lombok International Airport?

Sembalun is approximately 100 kilometres from Lombok International Airport (LOP) and the transfer by private vehicle takes around two and a half to three hours depending on road conditions and traffic. The route heads northeast from the airport, passing through Mataram and climbing steadily into the highlands. The final section of the drive up through the Sembalun valley is one of the most scenic road journeys on the island, with rice terraces and strawberry fields dropping away below and Rinjani filling the skyline ahead. All transfers for Venture Beyond school groups are arranged by our ground team at Rinjani Dawn Adventures and included in the expedition package.

What is the landscape like in Sembalun?

Sembalun’s landscape is unlike anywhere else on Lombok. The valley floor sits at over 1,000 metres and is carpeted in agricultural land, including the strawberry farms that Sembalun is locally famous for. Beyond the farms, the terrain opens into wide savanna grassland that sweeps up toward the slopes of Rinjani. The surrounding hills, including Pergasingan Hill to the northeast, create a natural amphitheatre around the valley. Mornings in Sembalun are often cool and misty, with temperatures that can drop to 12 to 18 degrees Celsius overnight, which comes as a genuine surprise to students arriving from the heat of Singapore or coastal Lombok.

What is the Sembalun trekking route and how does it differ from the Senaru route?

The Sembalun route is the eastern approach to Mount Rinjani and is the most commonly used path for summit attempts. It begins at the Rinjani Trek Centre in Sembalun Lawang at around 1,100 metres and ascends through open savanna grassland to the crater rim at Plawangan Sembalun at approximately 2,639 metres. Unlike the Senaru route, which passes through dense tropical rainforest and is entirely shaded, the Sembalun route is open and exposed to sun, wind, and temperature swings from the outset. The significant challenge comes after Post 3, where a steep section known locally as Bukit Penyesalan, or Hill of Regret, tests stamina considerably. Most Venture Beyond programs that traverse the full mountain begin in Senaru and finish in Sembalun, completing a point-to-point crossing. Full park information is available from the official Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani website.

What is the Sembalun Highlands Expedition offered by Venture Beyond?

The Sembalun Highlands Expedition is Venture Beyond’s entry-level program for school groups visiting Lombok. It is designed for schools that want a meaningful outdoor education experience without committing to a multi-day mountain trek. The program is based in and around Sembalun valley and includes guided activities in the highland landscape, a cultural visit to Desa Adat Beleq traditional village, and a trek to Pergasingan Hill with panoramic views of the valley and Rinjani summit. It is the recommended starting point for schools bringing a group to Lombok for the first time, or for year groups where student fitness levels vary significantly. From AUD $1,800 per student.

What is Pergasingan Hill and is it suitable for school groups?

Pergasingan Hill is a prominent ridge rising to approximately 1,670 to 1,750 metres above sea level, located to the northeast of Sembalun village. The ascent from the village takes around one and a half to three hours depending on the pace of the group, and the trail gains around 600 metres of elevation. It is the most accessible highland trek in the Sembalun area and provides outstanding views across the valley floor, over the strawberry fields and rice terraces, with Rinjani’s summit as a constant backdrop. The trail is well-marked and does not require technical skills, making it well suited to school groups with a reasonable base fitness level. It is a core component of the Venture Beyond Sembalun Highlands Expedition and serves as an excellent introduction to trekking at altitude for students who may not have prior hiking experience.

What waterfalls are near Sembalun?

The most accessible waterfalls in the Sembalun area are Mangku Sakti and Mangku Kodek, located near Sajang village and visited together on the same half-day excursion. The walk from Sajang village to the falls takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes each way. Mangku Sakti is the standout, known for its striking milky blue water caused by mineral deposits from Rinjani’s volcanic activity and the smooth limestone canyon formations surrounding it. Mangku Kodek sits just downstream and has a narrower slot canyon character. All waterfall visits are assessed in advance by our ground team for safety, particularly during and following wet season rainfall.

What cultural experiences are available in Sembalun for school groups?

Sembalun is home to a Sasak community with strong ties to the land and to local tradition. Desa Adat Beleq is a restored traditional hamlet within the district featuring bamboo houses with grass-thatched roofs, and it is one of the more authentic cultural sites available to visiting groups on Lombok. The strawberry farming families of the valley are warm and accustomed to visitors, and conversations here, mediated by our local guides, often become the moments students remember most clearly when they return home. Our guides from Rinjani Dawn Adventures, many of whom grew up in the region, provide context throughout the program on Sasak culture, Islamic practice, and the relationship between the local community and the mountain.

What is the climate like in Sembalun and when is the best time to visit?

Sembalun is significantly cooler than coastal Lombok at any time of year, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius and overnight temperatures that can fall to 12 to 15 degrees Celsius, sometimes lower during the dry season. The best time to visit for school expedition programs is during the dry season, which runs from approximately April to October. During this period the skies are clear, the hiking trails are in good condition, and the risk of rain disrupting activities is low. The wet season from November to March brings heavier rainfall, cloud cover, and slippery trail conditions that can affect program delivery. Venture Beyond schedules all school programs within the dry season window.

What is the difference between Sembalun and Senaru as a base for school groups?

Senaru and Sembalun are the two main gateway communities for Mount Rinjani expeditions, each on opposite sides of the mountain with a distinctly different character. Senaru sits on the northern slope at around 600 metres in a village setting with dense rainforest, traditional Sasak community life, and the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls a short walk from the accommodation. Sembalun sits on the eastern slope at over 1,000 metres in an open highland valley with wide savanna views, strawberry farms, and a cooler, more exposed climate. For programs that include a full mountain traverse, school groups typically start in Senaru and finish in Sembalun. For shorter programs focused on highland landscape, cultural experience, and accessible trekking, Sembalun is the primary base. Venture Beyond can design programs around either gateway or both.
