A full summit expedition to Mount Rinjani (3,726m), Indonesia's second highest volcano
Enquire NowThis page covers the Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition offered by Venture Beyond Expeditions, a school trekking program built around a single objective: the full summit of Mount Rinjani at 3,726m, Indonesia’s second highest volcano. Five itinerary options are available across two routes, ranging from a 2-day Sembalun Loop to a 5-day Senaru to Sembalun crossing, all reaching the summit and all operated within the Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani national park in partnership with Rinjani Dawn Adventures. The page includes interactive route maps, elevation profiles, and daily breakdowns for each itinerary, along with safety and risk management information aligned with the Australian Adventure Activity Standards. It is written for Heads of Outdoor Education, Deputy Principals, and teachers assessing whether the Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition is the right program for their students.
Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition
About This Program
The Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition is Venture Beyond’s flagship school program. It is built around a single, unambiguous objective – the full summit of Mount Rinjani at 3,726m, Indonesia’s second highest volcano. Everything about how we operate this program is designed to give students the best possible chance of reaching it safely, and returning changed by the experience.
The mountain component runs across three to five days depending on the itinerary your school selects, with most groups adding days either side for sightseeing, familiarisation, and rest. Total trip length is typically eight days. All trekking takes place within the Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani (TNGR) national park, on trails operated in partnership with Rinjani Dawn Adventures – the locally led operation co-founded by Venture Beyond director Angus Lawrence.
Programs are available in five itinerary formats, from a focused Sembalun Loop to a full five-day Senaru to Sembalun crossing. All options reach the summit. Most schools opt for the 4 Day / 3 Night or 5 Day / 4 Night Senaru routes, which include the crater lake, the hot springs, and enough time on the mountain for students to acclimatise properly and absorb what they are doing.
Groups are small by design. Guide ratios are 1:4, with a minimum of two guides on every program. Meals are fully catered by Cafe Rinjani Dawn, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-specific options available. Risk management is aligned with the Australian Adventure Activity Standards.
Full itinerary and risk assessment documentation are available on request.

Trekking Options
The Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition is offered across five itinerary options, ranging from a focused 2-day Sembalun Loop to a comprehensive 5-day crossing from Senaru to Sembalun. All options reach the full summit at 3,726m and are operated under the same guide ratios, safety framework, and catering standards.
The tabs below are arranged in order of duration and complexity. Use them to explore the route, elevation profile, and daily breakdown for each option. The right choice for your school will depend on the time available, the experience level of your students, and the kind of expedition you want to deliver.
Most schools opt for the 4 Day / 3 Night or 5 Day / 4 Night Senaru to Sembalun itineraries. Both include the crater lake, the hot springs, and a daytime summit – and both allow students enough time on the mountain to acclimatise properly, move at a considered pace, and absorb what they are experiencing. The shorter Sembalun Loop options are available for groups with limited time or specific program requirements, but are best suited to students with prior trekking experience.
If you are unsure which itinerary is right for your group, contact us and we will help you work through the options honestly.
For schools seeking a challenging but less demanding alternative to the full summit, our Sembalun Highlands Expedition offers a range of day and overnight hikes across the Sembalun Valley – a structured outdoor education experience without the demands of a Rinjani summit attempt.
Day 1 Distance: 9.3 km
Day 2 Distance: 16.5 km
Total Distance: 25.8 km
Max Elevation: 3,726m (Rinjani Summit)
Start Elevation: 1,063m (Sembalun)
Elevation Gain: +3,145m
Elevation Loss: -3,145m
Start: Sembalun Village
Finish: Sembalun Village
Trek Summary
The Sembalun Loop is the most direct route to the Rinjani summit and back. Starting and finishing in Sembalun Village, this two-day route gains over 2,600 metres of elevation before returning to the trailhead. It is efficient, uncompromising, and demanding.
We do not recommend this route for most school groups. The summit push begins at 2.30am on Day 2, requiring students to leave camp in darkness, climb steep volcanic scree for several hours, and reach the summit ridge before sunrise. The descent that follows is long and physically taxing, with loose terrain underfoot for much of the return to Sembalun. By the time groups finish, they have been moving for the better part of 16 hours across two days.
This route is offered exclusively to small, capable groups where fitness and mental resilience have been demonstrated in advance. It is not a suitable introduction to Rinjani, and it is not appropriate for groups of mixed capability. If you are unsure whether your students are ready for this route, they are not ready for this route.
We also run this same Sembalun Loop as a 3 Day / 2 Night package, which adds a rest day at crater rim camp and allows for a daytime summit ascent – a more manageable experience for school groups attempting this route. Note that neither the 2 Day nor 3 Day Sembalun Loop includes a visit to Segara Anak crater lake or the hot springs. Those experiences are part of the Senaru-based itineraries.
For most school expeditions, we recommend the 4 Day / 3 Night or 5 Day / 4 Night options, which approach via Senaru, include the lake and hot springs, and allow for better acclimatisation, genuine rest, and a summit experience that students can actually absorb rather than simply survive.
Day 1 Distance: 9.3 km
Day 2 Distance: 7.2 km
Day 3 Distance: 9.3 km
Total Distance: 25.8 km
Max Elevation: 3,726m (Rinjani Summit)
Start Elevation: 1,063m (Sembalun)
Elevation Gain: +3,145m
Elevation Loss: -3,118m
Start: Sembalun Village
Finish: Sembalun Village
Trek Summary
The 3 Day / 2 Night Sembalun Loop follows the same route as the 2-day option, but with one important difference: the summit is attempted in daylight. Rather than leaving camp at 2.30am, students rest at Crater Rim Camp after Day 1, summit and return on Day 2, then descend to Sembalun on Day 3.
This makes for a fundamentally safer and more manageable experience. There is no pre-dawn departure, no navigating steep volcanic scree in darkness, and no time pressure on the ascent. Students can move at a considered pace, take in the crater views, and return to camp before descending the following morning.
For schools wanting the full Rinjani summit without the demands of the 2-day format, this is our recommended Sembalun route. It is a serious undertaking – the elevation gain across three days is significant and the terrain is unforgiving – but the removal of the night ascent reduces both physical and operational risk considerably.
Note that this route does not include a visit to Segara Anak crater lake or the hot springs. Those experiences are part of the Senaru-based itineraries. For most school expeditions, we recommend considering the 4 Day / 3 Night or 5 Day / 4 Night Senaru options, which include the lake, hot springs, and a more gradual acclimatisation profile.
Day 1 Distance: 9.8 km
Day 2 Distance: 7.3 km
Day 3 Distance: 16.5 km
Total Distance: 33.6 km
Max Elevation: 3,726m (Rinjani Summit)
Start Elevation: 594m (Senaru)
Elevation Gain: +4,628m
Elevation Loss: -4,147m
Start: Senaru Village
Finish: Sembalun Village
Trek Summary
The Senaru to Sembalun route is the classic Rinjani crossing – and the most complete experience the mountain offers. Over three days, students travel from the northern trailhead at Senaru all the way through the volcanic interior, finishing in Sembalun on the eastern side. No two days cover the same ground, and no part of the route is easy.
Day 1 climbs from Senaru Village (594m) to the Senaru Crater Rim (2,609m) – a sustained ascent through montane forest that sets the tone for the days ahead. Day 2 descends into the caldera to Segara Anak crater lake and the hot springs, before a long afternoon climb to Sembalun Crater Rim Camp (2,659m). Day 3 begins with the summit push to 3,726m, followed by a full descent to Sembalun Village.
This is a significant undertaking. The total elevation gain across three days exceeds 4,600 metres, and Day 3 in particular demands that students summit and complete a long descent on legs that have already covered two hard days. It is not appropriate for mixed-ability groups or students without a demonstrated base of hiking fitness.
This route is well suited to Duke of Edinburgh Gold expeditions and other advanced school programs where a genuine multi-day wilderness crossing is the objective. The point-to-point format, the crater lake crossing, and the full summit make it the most complete Rinjani experience we offer.
Groups should be small, fit, and briefed on what to expect. If you are considering this route for your school, contact us to discuss whether your group is ready – we will give you an honest assessment.

Trek Summary
The 4 Day / 3 Night Senaru to Sembalun route is our recommended flagship program for school groups seeking the full Rinjani experience. It combines the complete mountain crossing with a daytime summit, a visit to Segara Anak crater lake and the hot springs, and enough time on the mountain for students to genuinely absorb what they are doing.
Day 1 climbs from Senaru Village (594m) through montane forest to the Senaru Crater Rim (2,609m) – a long, sustained ascent that sets the standard for the days ahead. Day 2 descends into the caldera, passing the crater lake and hot springs before a steady afternoon climb to Sembalun Crater Rim Camp (2,659m). Day 3 is the summit day – a full daytime ascent to 3,726m and back to camp, with no pre-dawn start and no time pressure. Day 4 is the descent to Sembalun Village.
The daytime summit on Day 3 is a deliberate design choice. Students leave camp in the morning with clear visibility, summit in daylight, and return to camp before descending the following day. There is no 2.30am departure, no navigating volcanic scree in darkness, and no compressing the entire route into a single punishing push. The experience is demanding – but it is demanding in the right way.
This route is suitable for school groups with a solid base of hiking fitness and appropriate teacher-to-student ratios. It is not an introductory program. If you are unsure whether this route is right for your group, contact us and we will give you an honest assessment.
For schools wanting additional acclimatisation time and a full day at the crater lake and hot springs, we recommend our 5 Day / 4 Night program, which builds an extra day into the itinerary at lake level before the summit push.
Day 1 Distance: 9.8 km
Day 2 Distance: 3.6 km
Day 3 Distance: 3.6 km
Day 4 Distance: 7.2 km
Day 5 Distance: 9.3 km
Total Distance: 33.4 km
Max Elevation: 3,726m (Rinjani Summit)
Start Elevation: 594m (Senaru)
Elevation Gain: +4,593m
Elevation Loss: -4,136m
Start: Senaru Village
Finish: Sembalun Village
Trek Summary
The 5 Day / 4 Night Senaru to Sembalun route is our most recommended program for schools that have the time. The additional day changes the character of the expedition entirely – this is not simply the 4-day route with an extra night added. It is a fundamentally different experience, with space built in for students to breathe, reflect, and engage with the mountain on their own terms.
Day 1 climbs from Senaru Village (594m) through montane forest to the Senaru Crater Rim (2,609m). Day 2 is a short descent into the caldera to Lake Segara Anak and the hot springs, where students camp at the lake – one of the most extraordinary overnight locations in Indonesia. The shorter distances on Days 2 and 3 create genuine downtime for journaling, swimming in the hot springs, exploring the lake shore, or simply sitting with the scale of what surrounds them. Day 3 climbs from the lake to Sembalun Crater Rim Camp (2,625m). Day 4 is the daytime summit push to 3,726m and return to camp. Day 5 descends to Sembalun Village.
The pacing of this itinerary also supports better acclimatisation. Students spend two nights above 2,600m before the summit day, arrive at the crater rim rested, and attempt the summit on legs that have not been pushed to their limit the day before. The result is a higher success rate, a safer experience, and a summit that students actually remember rather than simply survive.
If your school program has five days on the mountain, this is the itinerary we recommend without reservation. Contact us to discuss how it fits your broader expedition structure.

Safety and Operations
Venture Beyond Expeditions operates this program under a risk management framework aligned with the Australian Adventure Activity Standards. Our guide-to-student ratio is 1:4, with a minimum of two qualified guides on every program. All guides hold current first aid certification and have extensive experience operating specifically on Rinjani – this is not a generalised guiding team.
Mount Rinjani sits within the Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani (TNGR) national park, and all programs operate in full compliance with park regulations and permit requirements. Trail conditions, seasonal weather patterns, and volcanic activity status are assessed before every program. If our safety assessment determines that conditions are unsuitable for your group at any point, we will modify or cancel that component at no penalty to your school.
The most common injuries on Rinjani are sprains, strains, and twisted ankles – not altitude-related illness. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) risk is low because acclimatisation is built into every itinerary. Our longer programs spend multiple nights above 2,600m before the summit day, which meaningfully reduces physiological stress on students.
As of 2026, helicopter rescue is available for Rinjani – a significant development for emergency management on the mountain. The location of the nearest hospital and helicopter access points is confirmed before every season. Every lead teacher receives a full emergency protocol document before departure, covering evacuation routes, the contact chain, and the location of the nearest medical facilities.
Saefudin Zohri, co-founder of Rinjani Dawn Adventures, is based at our Senaru office throughout every school expedition and coordinates directly with guides and emergency services if required. Schools must provide adequate teacher supervision for their group, including appropriate female staff for female students. Female guides are available on request.
Detailed risk assessment documentation is available on request for school risk committees and board presentations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mount Rinjani and where is it located?
Mount Rinjani is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. At 3,726 metres, it is the second highest volcano in Indonesia and one of the most significant trekking destinations in Southeast Asia.
The mountain and its surrounding wilderness form the Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, a national park covering over 41,000 hectares.
Rinjani holds deep spiritual significance for the Sasak and Balinese peoples of Lombok, who make regular pilgrimages to the crater lake.
Who operates the Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition?
The program is operated by Venture Beyond Expeditions in partnership with Rinjani Dawn Adventures, the locally led guiding operation co-founded by Venture Beyond director Angus Lawrence and Lombok-based co-founder Saefudin Zohri.
Rinjani Dawn Adventures has operated on Rinjani for over 12 years. This is not a third-party arrangement – the same people who designed the program run it on the ground.
Which itinerary is right for our school group?
Most schools opt for the 4 Day / 3 Night or 5 Day / 4 Night Senaru to Sembalun route. Both include the crater lake, the hot springs, and a daytime summit push.
The 5-day option is our most recommended program – it allows for better acclimatisation, more time at the lake, and a less pressured summit day.
Shorter Sembalun Loop options are available for groups with limited time or prior Rinjani experience. Contact us and we will help you work through the options honestly.
What level of fitness is required for the Rinjani summit?
The summit expedition is a demanding multi-day trek involving significant elevation gain across consecutive days. Students should have a base of hiking fitness before attempting any Rinjani summit program.
The 4 and 5-day Senaru routes are more forgiving than the Sembalun Loop options due to better acclimatisation and shorter daily distances in the middle days.
We recommend schools undertake preparatory hikes in the months before departure and can provide a training framework on request.
What is the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) on Rinjani?
AMS risk on Rinjani is low compared to higher altitude destinations, and our itineraries are specifically designed to minimise it further. All programs include acclimatisation time built into the schedule, with students spending multiple nights above 2,600 metres before the summit day on our longer itineraries.
The most common injuries on Rinjani are sprains, strains, and twisted ankles – not altitude-related illness. Guides are trained to monitor students for symptoms throughout the program.
What happens if conditions are unsafe on summit day?
If at any point our safety assessment determines that conditions are unsuitable for your group, we will modify or cancel that component at no penalty to your school.
Summit attempts on Rinjani are subject to weather, volcanic activity status, and the assessed readiness of the group. Our guides make these calls on the mountain, not from an office.
Safety is never traded against itinerary completion.
What is the guide-to-student ratio on the Summit Expedition?
Our guide ratio is 1 guide per 4 students, with a minimum of two qualified guides on every program regardless of group size. All guides hold current first aid certification and have extensive experience operating specifically on Rinjani.
Emergency coordination is handled by Saefudin Zohri, based at our Senaru office throughout every school expedition.
Is helicopter rescue available on Mount Rinjani?
Yes. As of 2026, helicopter rescue is available for Mount Rinjani and access points are confirmed before every season. The location of the nearest hospital is also confirmed prior to each program.
Every lead teacher receives a full emergency protocol document before departure, covering evacuation routes, the contact chain, and medical facility locations.
Risk management is aligned with the Australian Adventure Activity Standards.
What is the best time of year to trek Rinjani with a school group?
The optimal trekking season is April to October, when weather conditions are most stable and the trails are at their most accessible.
The mountain can be trekked year-round, but the wet season months of November to March bring increased rainfall and trail difficulty.
Most school expeditions are scheduled between June and September to align with the Northern Hemisphere academic calendar and take advantage of peak season conditions.
What food is provided on the trek and can dietary requirements be accommodated?
All meals on the mountain are cooked fresh at camp by our porters and guides. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-specific diets are all accommodated.
Schools are asked to provide full dietary information for all students and staff at the time of booking.
Porters carry all camping equipment, cooking equipment, food, and spare bottled water for the duration of the trek. Students carry only their personal gear – day pack, water, and clothing layers.
The quality of food on the mountain is a genuine highlight of the program – students are consistently surprised by what comes out of a camp kitchen at altitude.
What documentation is available for school risk committees?
Venture Beyond Expeditions provides comprehensive risk assessment documentation aligned with the Australian Adventure Activity Standards. This includes route-specific risk assessments, emergency protocols, guide qualifications, evacuation procedures, and insurance details.
An information pack is available on request and can be prepared in a format suitable for board or risk committee presentation.
We are experienced in supporting schools through their internal approval processes.
How does the Rinjani Summit Expedition compare to other school expedition destinations?
Rinjani offers a combination that is difficult to match – a genuine high-altitude summit, a volcanic crater lake, hot springs, cultural immersion, and a locally led operation with over 12 years on the mountain.
Compared to more commonly used destinations such as Nepal or Kilimanjaro, Rinjani is more accessible from Singapore and Australia, lower in overall cost, and operated by a team with deep local knowledge rather than a generalist adventure travel company.
For schools seeking a transformative outdoor education experience in Asia, it is one of the most complete options available.
