Lombok is an Indonesian island located east of Bali, in the West Nusa Tenggara province. It is home to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest volcano at 3,726 metres, as well as pristine coral seas, jungle waterfalls, and some of Southeast Asia’s most dramatic highland scenery. Despite being just a short flight from Bali, Lombok sees a fraction of the tourist traffic — which makes it an exceptional environment for school expeditions.

Lombok offers a rare combination of genuine physical challenge, cultural immersion, and natural environment that is hard to find anywhere else in the region. Mount Rinjani provides a tiered range of expedition options, from accessible highland treks to full summit attempts, meaning every school can find an experience matched to their students’ fitness and programme goals. The island is small enough to feel manageable, yet remote enough to be genuinely transformative.

Venture Beyond Expeditions is an Australian-registered company that designs and runs school group expeditions exclusively on Lombok, Indonesia. We are not a booking agent or a middleman. Our founder built Rinjani Dawn Adventures on Lombok over twelve years ago, and that operation remains our exclusive local partner on the ground. When a school books with Venture Beyond, they are working directly with the people who designed the safety protocols, know every guide by name, and have operated on Rinjani for over a decade.

Safety is the non-negotiable foundation of everything we do. Our expeditions use experienced, trained guides with proven emergency protocols, and our guide-to-student ratios are designed specifically for school groups, not individual travellers. Every expedition includes a pre-trip risk assessment, daily safety briefings on the mountain, and a clear go/no-go decision framework. If our safety assessment determines that conditions are unsuitable for your group, we will modify or cancel that component of the trip at no penalty to your school.

Direct flights from Singapore to Lombok International Airport take approximately two hours and twenty minutes. There are regular direct services operated by Scoot and other carriers, making Lombok one of the most accessible expedition destinations in the region for Singapore-based schools. Australian schools typically route through Bali or Singapore, with total travel time from major Australian cities ranging from six to nine hours.

Venture Beyond offers four school expedition programmes on Lombok, designed as a progression from introductory to flagship. The Sembalun Highlands Expedition is an accessible highland trek suited to first-time Lombok groups. The Rinjani Crater Rim Expedition climbs to the crater rim and second summit, a serious achievement without the full Rinjani push. The Mount Rinjani Summit Expedition reaches the full summit at 3,726 metres and is reserved for small, experienced groups. The Cultural and Service Expedition focuses on community engagement and lower-intensity outdoor experience. Every expedition is custom-quoted for your school.

Our expeditions are designed for secondary school students, typically from Year 10 upwards, aged 15 and over. The right expedition tier depends on your students’ fitness levels and your school’s programme goals, not age alone. We work with you during the planning process to assess group fitness, set appropriate expectations, and select the expedition that is the right match. Younger or less experienced groups are well suited to the Sembalun Highlands or Cultural and Service options, while older or more experienced students can work toward the Crater Rim or full Summit expeditions.
